The digital bookshop that prints out on demand

A revolution in publishing may soon see bookshops stripped of their shelves.
Instead,
customers will simply choose the novel they want, punch some numbers
into a digital printer and leave a few minutes later with a freshly
printed and bound copy.
The "Espresso Book
Machine", which is capable of produding a 300-page paperback from a
digital file in seven minutes, is expected to arrive in Britain soon.
Developed in the US, the device made its debut in the science and business section of the New York Public Library last week.
On
Demand Books, the company founded by Jason Epstein, one of America's
most senior publishers, says it is in talks with retailers and
libraries in Britain to lease the machine.
Crockatt
and Powell, a small south London bookshop, is one of the first in the
queue in this country to acquire one of the new generation of automated
